Do you have a faulty Transmission Range/Gear Position Sensor & Neutral Safety Switch?
If your batts and starting system are good, but you only hear a clicking sound instead of a starting engine when you turn the ignition key, you may have a failed transmission range switch or sensor. Ever tried to start your car while it’s in gear? It’s impossible to do thanks to a safeguard built into your vehicle called a transmission range switch or transmission range sensor (TRS).
Sometimes called a neutral safety switch, the TRS is an electrical switch that tells your vehicle’s powertrain control module what gear your transmission is in when you turn the ignition key to the “on” position.
Like any mechanical component, the TRS can become faulty through wear and tear over time, and that can lead to significant problems with your transmission. If your car’s TRS is is failure mode, you won’t be able to start your car, the “service engine soon” light on your dashboard may be lit or you con see some very odd transmission behavior. (car starting in the wrong gear, trans struggling to change gears, slippage) - If you got some miles and years on your rig, you may want to proactively replace the unit and save yourself some future headaches.
